What’s most alarming is that home fires have become more dangerous and devastating recently because of the flammability of the materials in the house. Thirty years ago, you had on average about 14 to 17 minutes to escape a house fire, according to Consumer Safety Director John Drengenberg of Underwriters Laboratories (UL). “Today, with the prevalence of synthetic materials in the home, occupants have roughly 2 to 3 minutes to get out,” said Drengenberg. Fire testing conducted by UL has found a home with mostly synthetic-based furnishings can be entirely engulfed in less than 4 minutes. In as little as 30 seconds a small flame can become a major fire that ravages a home and threatens the lives of the people inside.

Standing in the afternoon chill, the man, Max Azzarello, 37, of St. Augustine, Fla., threw pamphlets into the air before dousing himself with an accelerant and setting his body ablaze. The police hurried to extinguish the flames, and he was taken to a hospital burn unit, gravely injured. Candles, fireworks, decorative lighting on Christmas trees, matches, lighters and beyond can be culprits of dangerous fire accidents in and around your home without due diligence. Just like all open flames or combustible heat sources, these should never be unsupervised or unattended.

Outdoor cooking with grills, barbecues, grease friers, fire pits and wood stoves can all be a source of unwanted house fires as well. Be sure to position these tools away from the side of your home and nowhere near a wooden fence or any other highly combustible materials, and never leave them unattended while they are actively producing flames or heat. As the fire grows higher and hotter, more flammable objects and furnishings will ignite from spreading flames, including wooden cabinets and countertops, wallpaper, hanging baskets, and curtains. With the fire moving beyond the stovetop and other areas beginning to burn, a denser plume of hot air and smoke rises and spreads across the ceiling.

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- An intense fire erupted at a rubbish yard and spread into commercial-residential buildings, sending a thick plume of smoke billowing into the sky in downtown Los Angeles Thursday afternoon. But the scene was still active as firefighters were engaged in an extended operation to locate smoldering debris in the burned-out building, said Nicholas Prange, an LAFD spokesperson. Intense heat from the blaze started a fire in one unit of a neighboring apartment building. Flames were seen coming from the three-story building when the first units arrived, according to the department. As one of the major hits of Jones' later career, it appears on numerous compilations of Jones' work. Remember, never to attempt to extinguish a serious house fire without professional help, and call your local fire department while you safely evacuate the scene.

Our house fire example starts on the stovetop since cooking fires account for almost half (44 percent) of all home fires. A few seconds is all it takes for a pot or pan to boil over the rim, spilling flammable oil-laden contents directly onto the cooking flame or red hot electric burner. In a few hundredths of a second, grease or other fatty substances ignite into flames. The flashpoint of many common cooking oils is around 600 degrees F, but when gas or electric burners are placed on high, temperatures can approach 1000 degrees F.
Heat from the fire radiates to other parts of the kitchen, heating up tables, chairs, shelves, and cookbooks. If you’re still in the room, this hot, smoky air can instantly burn the inside of your breathing passages. Plus, fires generate highly poisonous gases, including carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide (created when insulation, carpets, clothing, and plastics burn). Electric Ladyland includes a cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower", which became the Experience's best-selling single, reaching number six in the UK and number 20 in the United States. Firefighters were initially pouring water onto the flames burning in a rubbish yard to the rear of a row of buildings with commercial businesses on the ground floor and residential units above. The track was released as the lead single from Reload on September 13, 1999, and became a hit across Europe and Australia, reaching No. 1 in Iceland, No. 2 in Sweden, and the top ten in Australia, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Norway and the United Kingdom.
A White House official told Business Insider that the respective offices involved in the program "are working diligently to ensure a smooth, safe, and timely transition" from the current fleet of helicopters to the VH-92. The VH-92's lawn-scorching problems were first discovered in 2018 during the Trump administration, kick-starting an effort to resolve the issue. Because of this unrelenting problem, the new VH-92 is only carrying White House officials or Secret Service personnel instead of the president himself and is restricted to landing on paved surfaces, the report said.
The Electrical Safety Foundation reports that 65% of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no working smoke detectors. ESFI recommends smoke detectors should be installed on every level of the home, inside every bedroom and outside every sleeping area. Test your smoke detectors (and your carbon monoxide detectors simultaneously) at minimum twice per year, including replacing the batteries at each inspection, and replace any devices that are more than seven years old. House fires related to heating appliances can happen at any time, though they are unsurprisingly more common between November and March. Between 2015 and 2019, data from the NFPA shows that heating equipment resulted in the second leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries and was the third leading cause of home fire deaths and direct property damage. Portable cooking appliances that produce heat, including toasters and electric griddles, should also never be left unattended while in use.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Authorities arrested a second man Thursday in connection with burning down a home on Cleveland’s West Side. During the last meeting, Ghaben was asked whether he would preserve any historic artifacts from the house before the demolition. He said he would be willing to pull windows and doors and donate them, according to the village. On Wednesday, the village's Historic Preservation Commission is set to consider approval of the demolition of the house at 225 E. Four commercial units and the residential units above them sustained fire damage, according to LAFD.
If flames are visible from the outside when firefighters arrive, they immediately go into an aggressive attack strategy trying to ascertain if they can still safely save lives. Water simultaneously cools the burning debris (lower temps mean fewer flammable gases being generated) and can limit oxygen’s ability to fuel the fire. Firefighters may also vent off hot smoke and gases either by breaking open upstairs windows or cutting a hole in the roof. Spattered grease or oil residue on a dirty stovetop will ignite, causing flames to travel across the range.
Here are the top five causes of house fires and how to prevent them from happening to keep you and your home safe. When the smoky layer inches down to the top part of a doorway, an open window or a vent, it quickly streams out of the room. Then the poisonous smoke and heated air travels through hallways and up stairwells to the second floor. "Kickstart My Heart" is about all the ways Motley Crue gets their blood flowing without drugs. It was inspired by their bass player Nikki Sixx, who claimed he had to be revived with a shot of adrenaline to the heart after an overdose. "The program is studying solutions," the GAO said, noting that those included certain "aircraft design changes, lawn surface treatments, and operational procedural changes to minimize landing zone risks."
The single was backed with Jones' live recordings of the EMF song "Unbelievable" and the Beatles' "Come Together", as well as remixes of "Burning Down the House" by Delakota, Pepe Deluxé and DJ Scissorkicks. Fires from smoking also tend to be more deadly as they often ignite while the resident is asleep as the result of smoking in bed or on a sofa. Mattresses are highly flammable—and though many modern models come with flame retardant protections—it only takes a single stray ash to set ablaze blankets, clothing, carpet or other flammable fabrics to create devastating results. Whether or not your house will be livable after a major fire will depend on many factors, and you will need to obtain permission from the Fire Marshall to reenter your home. After a major fire, dry wall is left dehydrated and crumbling and will need to be replaced.
The Government Accountability Office, a watchdog agency, noted in a June 2020 report on the matter that the military had "yet to demonstrate that it can meet the requirement to land on the White House South Lawn without causing damage." The rotors and engine exhaust from the Sikorsky-manufactured VH-92 Patriot will occasionally burn the grass when it lands, an issue that was initially identified in 2018, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday. A bulk of the fire was extinguished by 4 p.m., but firefighters were still there dousing hot spots. All 11 of the fires were set within a half-mile radius of one another in North Hollywood in a one-hour span. The house used in the video is located on Myrtle Street in Union, New Jersey. The stark whites of minimalist styles move aside for the warm and traditional shades of cream in the cottage style.

It’s all about indulging in the beauty and simplicity of the everyday, with an emphasis on well-loved wood furniture, botanical patterns, textural fabrics, and bespoke pieces that have an heirloom quality about them. Cottagecore (sometimes referred to as Countrycore or Farmcore)[1][2] is an internet aesthetic idealising rural life.
Find a Vintage Mirror
Apply these tips to your entire space to achieve the cottagecore aesthetic throughout your home. Cottagecore works best when you use patterns and textures in the same space. Many times, texture comes from the home itself or the antique fixtures you provide. Exposed brick, raw beams, and old wood floors all add texture to a space. Use this, along with a variety of patterns, to create a layered look. The patterns can be vintage or floral, but they should complement the natural texture of the space for the most authentic cottagecore feel.

When it comes to designing a cottagecore-inspired home, you need not look further than your own backyard for color palette inspiration. The movement takes its inspiration largely from nature, meaning warm neutrals and soft greens will be your main go-to's. However, that's not to say other colors can't make an appearance in your home—you just have to be mindful of where and how you use them. Rich marigold and umber can be a great energetic accent hue, while moody burgundy and brown act as a grounding, comforting anchor in a space. When in doubt, choose colors that can be best described as "muddy," with a slightly toned down and understated quality about them.

The cottagecore aesthetic favors old-school wooden cutting boards that could be used for preparing food or as decoration. Choosing the right board doesn't have to be difficult, but Simply Recipes notes that you must pay special attention to edge grain and end grain. The top of edge grain boards has long wooden fibers, whereas end grain boards are made with cross-sections of wood fused together. Wooden cutting boards made of dense woods such as maple, oak, and cherry are long lasting because their surface pores are smaller, so bacteria can't infiltrate the board and cause it to lose its durability and get warped. Cottagecore is a social media hashtag and internet-based lifestyle trend inspired by a quaint vision of country life. Incorporate the cottagecore style in every part of your home, including your work space.
The Cup of Life proposed washing them with salt water before using them since it could extend its life by acting as a protectant shield for the porcelain. Many modern or farmhouse designs are whitewashing or painted brick. One feature of cottagecore design is to use plants and other outdoor accents to bring life and color into your design. Cottagecore houses feature live flowers, greenery, and houseplants to bring nature into the home. Another staple of cottagecore is putting herbs in the kitchen. Many cottagecore kitchens feature dried herbs and plants hanging from the ceiling.

Flames pour through the doorway into the neighboring living room, setting the carpet and upholstered furniture on fire. Synthetics like polyurethane and polyester foam in sofas, pillows and carpets release tremendous amounts of heat. Back in the kitchen, the blaze has penetrated the wall and ceiling and flames travel quickly through unseen structural vertical shafts in interior walls and horizontal shafts between floors. Welsh singer Tom Jones recorded a version of "Burning Down the House" with Swedish pop band the Cardigans for his 1999 collaborations album, Reload. Given the high temperatures of large fires, most if not all of the home furnishings may be rendered unusable. The type of construction materials used to build your home will influence the severity of damage. Synthetics like polyurethane, polystyrene, and PVC used in glues, insulation, and plumbing will auto-ignite at temps between 850 and 1075 degrees. At 1000 degrees F, steel plates used in engineered roof trusses will start to buckle and they lose 40 percent of their load-carrying capacity. Newer homes built with engineered wood can experience floor collapse in as little as 6 minutes. "Burning Down the House" is a song by new wave band Talking Heads, released in July 1983 as the first single from their fifth studio album Speaking in Tongues.

The good news is that most accidental house fires can be avoided with proper education on the causes of house fires and how to practice fire safety. Identifying potential risks within your home and eliminating potential sources that could stoke and spread flames—heat, oxygen and fuel—can help lower the chance of a house fire. As the flames intensify, the smoke and hot air rising off the fire are more than 190 degrees F.

Massive blaze in downtown Los Angeles sends smoke billowing into the sky
According to Glenn Gaines, the Deputy U.S. Fire Administrator, fires kill more Americans each year than all natural disasters in the United States combined. And even if individuals are spared, fire can cost tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage—up to $50,000 to rebuild a kitchen engulfed in flames. It only takes 30 seconds for a small flame to turn into a full-blown life-threatening fire.

Candles should be placed on a non-flammable surface at least 12 inches away from other flammable items and kept away from playful children or accidental knocking over, and never left aflame while sleeping. Electrical distribution and lighting equipment are a leading cause of home structure fires and are often the result of inadequate, loose or faulty electrical connections. Short circuits, loose or sparking connections, poorly installed, old or overheated wires, circuits and lighting fixtures that are improperly matched to the current are all risk factors that could easily be missed by the untrained eye. Small grease fires may be extinguished with a fast response of turning off the heat, smothering the fire with a metal lid or sprinkling baking soda or salt on the flames.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, days after his social media post in which the Georgia Republican was dubbed "Moscow Marjorie." Mayes’ term as Arizona attorney general has been marked by other election cases stemming from Trump’s false claims about fraud in the 2020 election and after. In 2022, Lamon claimed during an interview with KTVK-TV in Phoenix that the electors were part of a backup plan in case Trump's election fraud claims proved successful.

Bowyer is a committeeman for the Republican National Committee. He told The Arizona Republic in 2022 about the so-called fake elector plot, that he didn't know "all the details and facts" but confirmed he was an elector for the state GOP. Most homes have some risk of natural disasters, and may be impacted by climate change due to rising temperatures and sea levels. "Israel is literally dominating in their war with Hamas after being brutally attacked killing thousands of innocent people, and not one single American dollar has been spent on that war yet. Just think about that," she wrote on X. "She has, in very little time, undermined the influence of her party's entire right flank, driving less unhinged Republicans—most notably the House speaker, Mike Johnson—to brush back her and her ilk like the poo-flinging chaos monkeys they are." Trump placed a phone call directly to Ducey as the governor certified the state’s election results.

There is no known criminal investigation in Wisconsin. Last fall, Mayes charged two local officials who delayed the certification of midterm election results in 2022 in Cochise County. The officials voted against certifying the county’s election results by the statutory deadline after they aired baseless accusations about the integrity of the election for months.
Trump was also indicted in federal court in August over the fake electors scheme. Three fake electors are among those charged in Georgia alongside Trump and others in a sweeping indictment accusing the defendants of participating in a wide-ranging scheme to illegally overturn the state’s results. A state grand jury on Wednesday issued an indictment in which the electors are each charged with nine criminal counts, including conspiracy, fraudulent schemes and artifices, fraudulent schemes and practices, and six counts of forgery.

The indictment released Wednesday names 11 Republicans who submitted a document to Congress falsely declaring that Trump had beaten Joe Biden in Arizona in the 2020 presidential election. The names of seven other defendants were not immediately released because they had not yet been served with the charges. Arizona was one of seven states where “alternate electors” signed paperwork falsely claiming Trump had won the states. Prosecutors have already charged “alternate electors” in Nevada, Georgia and Michigan. Gen. Raúl Torrez said that state’s five Republican electors could not be prosecuted under the current law. Fake electors there and in Pennsylvania had added caveats to their election certificates, saying the submissions were in case they were later recognized as duly elected, qualified electors.

Those charged in Arizona on Wednesday include Kelli Ward, a former state GOP chair and failed U.S. Senate candidate; state Sen. Jake Hoffman; Tyler Bowyer, a Turning Point USA executive who serves on the Republican National Committee; state Sen. Anthony Kern, who was photographed in restricted areas outside the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack and is now a U.S. House candidate; Greg Safsten, former executive director of the state GOP; and energy executive James Lamon, another unsuccessful U.S. In Arizona, Mayes’ predecessor, Republican Mark Brnovich, had conducted an investigation into the 2020 election, but the fake elector allegations were not part of that examination, according to Mayes’ office. In Wisconsin, 10 Republicans who posed as electors settled a civil lawsuit, admitting their actions were part of an effort to overturn Biden’s victory.
The county certified its election results only after a court ordered it to do so. The Arizona charges are the latest example of Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election sprouting into legal cases during his 2024 bid to retake office. Ward was also subpoenaed by the Jan. 6 committee related to the elector scheme and exercised her Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate herself more than 200 times when later testifying before that committee. Kelli Ward is a past chair of the Arizona GOP.

Safsten, who has worked as an adviser to several Republican congressmen from Arizona, was executive director of the Arizona Republican Party when he signed as a Trump elector. Pellegrino was secretary for the Arizona Trump electors and has a long history of leadership in state GOP politics. She has led two conservative groups, the Arizona Federation of Republican Women, and the Ahwatukee Republican Women's Club, and was a delegate to Republican National Committee conventions in 2012, 2016 and 2020. Eleven Republicans who signed documents falsely claiming that Donald Trump won the state in 2020 are facing criminal consequences in Arizona for the first time.
As the Republican electors sent illegitimate certifications to Washington, Trump sought to put pressure on Maricopa County officials and other Arizona Republicans, including then-state House Speaker Rusty Bowers and then-Gov. A well-known GOP activist, Michael Ward was subpoenaed by the Department of Justice in its investigation of Trump's election interference. He has been married to Kelli Ward since 1995 and has served as her campaign manager in bids for the Arizona Legislature.
The indictment names the 11 Republican electors, and the names of seven other defendants are redacted. Those individuals have not yet been served, but details in the indictment make clear they include top Trump aides, including Rudy Giuliani and Mark Meadows. Trump lost Arizona by just under 11,000 votes.
Cottle has served on the Arizona GOP Executive Committee and Maricopa County Republican Committee. She led the Pledge of Allegiance at a rally for former President Donald Trump in January 2022 in Florence, Ariz.
Moorhead was the second vice chair of the Gila County Republican Party when he signed as a Trump elector, a ranking but not top position in the local Republican Party in one of Arizona's rural counties northeast of metro Phoenix. Montgomery is a former head of the Cochise County Republican Committee. He led GOP leadership in Arizona's rural southeast corner until he was defeated by a surprise challenger in December 2022. Montgomery has supported hand-counting ballots and pushed county leaders to ignore warnings about doing so before the 2022 election.
An Arizona grand jury has indicted Mark Meadows, who served as former President Trump’s chief of staff, and former Trump lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani along with 16 others in an election interference case. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat, led the investigation. She won her election to be the state’s chief prosecutor in November 2022, replacing Republican Mark Brnovich, a onetime ally of Trump who later earned his scorn for not substantiating his claims of election fraud in the state. The state Republican Party documented the signing of the certificate in a social media post and sent it to Congress and the National Archives. One is described as an attorney “often identified as the Mayor” who spread false allegations of election fraud, a description that clearly describes former New York Mayor Giuliani. Another is described as Trump’s “chief of staff in 2020,” a clear reference to Meadows.
Cases of norovirus on cruise ships are reported more commonly than on land because cruise ship passengers are required to report cases to the ship’s medical team. There are also behind-the-scenes procedures that cruise lines must follow. For instance, medical officers are required to maintain illness incident counts for each voyage that involves a stop at an American port. They are also required to communicate to the CDC, within 24 hours of arrival at a U.S. port, "the number of passengers and crew members who reported diarrhea to the ship's medical staff" during that voyage.
What do cruise ships do to prevent norovirus outbreaks on board?
Depending on individual balance, our ability to adjust to motions varies, so not everyone experiences seasickness. This blog helps over a million people to plan their cruises each month. As soon as you become unwell, it’s vital that you return to your cabin and call reception to report it. "MSC Cruises rigorously adheres to health protocols, and the results of this inspection do not reflect the brand's high standards," the person added.

When I was on board a cruise ship during a norovirus outbreak, this flyer about the correct handwashing procedure was distributed to all passengers on their cabins. Whilst cruise ships have a bad reputation for norovirus contamination, norovirus is, in fact, common anywhere where people are contained – such as offices, schools, hospitals and hotels. It is not any more common on cruise ships than in any of these places. Beyond that, crewmembers distribute information to passengers onboard offering precautionary tips, as well as a heads-up memo at embarkation to travelers boarding a ship that had previously seen a high percentage of illness. And, as mentioned above, passengers who report symptoms may be quarantined to their cabins.

The latest instance was on a Viking Cruise — which sailed from June 6 to June 20 — where 110 passengers and nine crew members contracted the illness, according to the agency. Shockingly, those affected by the virus accounted for nearly 15% of the entire onboard population, making it the largest percentage of individuals affected by norovirus this year. Studies have shown that norovirus can continue to spread for two weeks or more after an infected person stops having symptoms of the illness, according to the CDC. Most people get better after a few days, but severe cases may require hospitalization. According to data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been 13 outbreaks across six different cruise lines.
Norovirus symptoms and treatment
Health officials at the CDC determined that norovirus caused the outbreak after Viking Cruises collected and sent specimens to the agency's laboratory for testing. While cruise ships have strict sanitation practices, the resilience of norovirus complicates matters. The virus can survive for days on surfaces and is resistant to many common disinfectants, making it challenging to eliminate once an outbreak has occurred.
Report It
If at any time during the cruise the number of ill passengers or crew exceeds 2 percent, the vessel must file a special report notifying CDC of the illness. They must also submit reports if 2% or more of the passengers and crew become ill and the ship is scheduled to visit a U.S. port within 15 days. If the number hits 3% or more, cases must be reported to the CDC even if the ship is not scheduled to call on a U.S. port within the next 15 days. In the first six months ending in June, cruise lines have reported 13 separate outbreaks to the CDC. It’s the most number of reported norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships since 2012.

The hotel staff is required to implement special cleaning and disinfection procedures for sanitizing the whole ship. To do that, they use stronger solvents, like Microbac, chlorine bleach, hydrogen peroxide. Sick passengers and crew are quarantined in their rooms, typically for at least 2 days.
In 2018, the number of reported illness outbreaks on cruise ships was 15. The total number of infected was 1177 (of those 1099 passengers and 78 crew). You can get norovirus from an infected person, from contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces.

A few years ago an experimental Norovirus vaccine (applied as nasal spray) was developed by the "Center for Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology" (Arizona State University). Numerous studies confirm that a quick application of hand sanitizer doesn't kill the Norovirus. It takes about 30 sec of hard rubbing with hot water and soap (including under the nails) to wash it. This is particularly important at mealtimes, as this is when it’s easy to transfer any virus from your hands to your mouth.
The index case likely occurred in a food and beverage crew member sailing on a crew-only voyage (voyage 1). In general, crew members with AGE reported to onboard medical personnel in a timely manner and were isolated until 48 hours after symptoms subsided. Crew member transmission was followed by passenger transmission on voyages 3, 4, and 5. Approximately 70% of crew members with AGE interacted with passengers (i.e., housekeeping and food and beverage services). VSP partnered with the United States Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry’s Geospatial Research, Analysis, and Services Program to create four-dimensional visual models of the ship.

That’s how many people have been infected with the norovirus while aboard cruise ships this year, according to CDC data. The outbreaks happened on Celebrity Cruises, Viking Cruises, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International and P&O Cruises. The number of outbreaks in the first six months of 2023 is higher than the yearly total during every year since 2012, when there were 16 outbreaks on cruise ships reported to the CDC. Shipboard medical service fees vary and are usually set by medical practitioners. In most cruise ship hospitals, some supplies and medications are provided to passengers and crew for free - like aspirin, seasickness pills, small bandages.
